Book of Common Prayer

The Prayer Book Society was established in England in 1975. Inspired by that, the late Dr. L.D. Wheeler held an informal meeting at St. Thomas’s North Sydney on 20th October 1979. This led to a formal meeting there on the 1st March 1980, when an Australian Branch of the Prayer Book Society was inaugurated.

The Prayer Book Society was formed in 1983, with branches in NSW, South Australia and Victoria with Bishop Lionel Renfrey as patron, a sister society to those in England, Scotland, Canada, U.S.A  and South Africa.

The NSW Branch has continued with its activities since then, especially with four annual Prayer Book Days held in various churches, in the Diocese of Sydney and beyond, while continuing its links of fellowship with other PBS groups and supporters in Australia and overseas. Copies of the Book of Common Prayer are distributed to graduates of Moore Theological College, Newtown, NSW and St Mark’s Theological College, Canberra.
